Fun Stuff to Choose From! in Google Classroom

Fun Stuff to Choose From!

Well, you've officially made it to the LAST INSTRUCTIONAL WEEK! The finish line is in sight and you're almost ready to cross it! Keep going and finish strong!

1) Choose one activity to complete from the website. There are 20 in all, so you may do more than one. PLEASE check with an adult who makes the grocery buying decisions before you start using up all the eggs, food coloring, or sugar! :)
2) Upload/email a picture, or schedule a time to video chat, showing which one(s) you did.

Due:

Static Electricity! in Google Classroom

Static Electricity!

For this week, watch the video about static electricity. Jared explains as he demonstrates five different ways to explore static electricity with objects found in the home. After watching the video:
1) Choose at least ONE of the five ways shown exploring static electricity and upload a picture or video of yourself conducting the experiment.
2) Then choose ONE writing component to show your learning:
A. Fill out a 3-2-1 Science Notes about Static Electricity; OR
B. Write a POEM (of at least 5 lines) about Static Electricity. Your poem does not have to rhyme.

Contact me with any questions! I hope you enjoy this. :)

*You may substitute materials if you don't have the exact ones as he does. For example, if you don't have confetti, just use small torn up or shredded pieces of paper!

Due:

The Exploding Sandwich Bag! in Google Classroom

The Exploding Sandwich Bag!

1) Watch the video of Science Bob on The Today Show. He will conduct the exploding sandwich bag activity.
2) Read the PDF directions
3) You have four choices to "turn in" the activity:
1- take and upload a picture of YOU AND YOUR materials BEFORE they are mixed in the bag
2- take and upload a video of you conducting the activity
3- arrange a time with me to video meet and I can watch you conduct the activity in real time. You can even show me next Monday morning during our video meeting.
4- let me know of another method not listed that works best for you.

*This activity can be done more than once, so if you need/want to practice once or twice, that is fine. Just check with a parent to make sure you can use the materials more than once.

Due:

Section 3: Earth's Geologic Record- part 1 in Google Classroom

Section 3: Earth's Geologic Record- part 1

1) Read pages 23-24 in your lab manual
2) Watch the documentary about whale fossils found in Chile, South America.
3) Leave a comment below about the video or the reading.
4) After you leave a comment, please mark "Submit"/"Turn in".

Due:

Section 3: Earth's Geologic Record- part 2 in Google Classroom

Section 3: Earth's Geologic Record- part 2

1) Read pages 25-27
2) Fill Out 3-2-1 Science Notes using what you've learned in all of Section 3.

Due:

Section 3: Earth's Geologic Record- part 3 in Google Classroom

Section 3: Earth's Geologic Record- part 3

On pages 32-34 you will read descriptions of eight different types of rock, most of which can be found in Mesa County. Find an example of at least ONE type of rock, take a picture and upload it with the following labels:
1) Rock Name (example: Basalt)
2) Rock Type (example: igneous)
3) Information (example: formed by cooled lava) *Keep this part brief!

You may have some of these around your house or neighborhood. Maybe a neighbor has some in their front yard. If you don't, some areas to check out are Whitewater and heading up to the Grand Mesa. Check with your parents/guardians to see if they're able to take you on a drive, hike, or bike ride to find rocks. You can also visit The Rock Shop, a local landscaping store that has most of these rocks available to look at!

Communicate any complications you have in completing this assignment, so that I may help you succeed in another way.

*Students, did you know that you are walking on a type of rock formation every time you go outside? Look at the ground. Are you walking on asphalt, concrete, dirt, gravel, etc? Think about what makes up the ground you walk on. :) Hope this helps!

*Oh, if any of you have stone counter tops (quartz, limestone, granite), that counts, too!

Due:

Section 2: Earth's Interior Part 2- Tectonic Plates and Cycling of Earth Materials in Google Classroom

Section 2: Earth's Interior Part 2- Tectonic Plates and Cycling of Earth Materials

1) Read pages 15-18 of the lab manual.
2) Watch the videos about Plate Tectonics and the Rock Cycle.
3) Fill out the 3-2-1 Science Notes (I will not accept "I don't know" or "I don't have a question" as a response).

Due:

Section 2: Earth's Interior
Part 1- Studying Earth's Structure in Google Classroom

Section 2: Earth's Interior Part 1- Studying Earth's Structure

1) Read pages 12-14 in the lab manual.
2) Watch the corresponding video about the structure of the Earth.
3) Find something that has at least three layers. Cut it in half and label the layers as if it were Earth's layers. Take a picture and upload it to this assignment, or email it to me.
***If you're unable to take/upload a picture, schedule a time to video chat with me and you can show it to me if needed. :)

Other items you can use that have layers are apples, peanut M & M's, almond M & M's, even lasagna! If you're unable to find anything, draw and/or make a model of Earth's layers instead. Be creative! Use Legos, craft items, rocks, dirt, mud...just have fun with it!
*I have added an example of my own. I had to prop my apple up with a small box because it kept falling over.

Due:

Section 1: A Changing Planet- part 2 in Google Classroom

Section 1: A Changing Planet- part 2

Reading pages 6-9, then fill out 3-2-1 notes according to what you read. Finally, watch the news footage from 2016 about an eroding coastline cliff in California and how it has impacted neighborhoods.

Due:

Erosion Evidence in Google Classroom

Erosion Evidence

1) Watch the video about an island in Canada eroding away.
2) Go outside and find evidence of erosion at your house, around your neighborhood, or somewhere on your property. To
3) Document your evidence by taking a picture and upload it or you email it to me: [email protected]. You may also draw a picture of your evidence and scan/email it to me.
4) Describe your evidence. Tell me where it is at, what kind of damage has it caused, and what has most likely caused the erosion.

I suggest you hold off on this assignment until a parent/guarding can help you. They will be able (hopefully) to help you identify evidence of erosion. REMEMBER, erosion is not just dirt that has moved or rocks that have broken down. Erosion also happens on houses, vehicles, bicycles, and tools. Anything that is left outside exposed to weather over a long period of time will have evidence of erosion (rust, chipping/peeling paint). Be observant and look all around.

You may submit up to three (3) examples of erosion. HAVE FUN!

Communicate with me any problems you have.

Due:
